Democrat Policies Push People into Poverty, Unemployment, and Health Risks

(October 6, 2014) - The ten poorest cities in the United States are run by Democrat politicians, with Detroit, Michigan, topping the list. Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Miami, St. Louis, El Paso, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and Newark, New Jersey, are all cities run by Democrats for decades.

Hispanic unemployment, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, was at its lowest in 2006 during a Republican administration at 4.7%, and is 7.5% today during a Democrat administration.

Several health scares have taken hold in America, from ebola to the enterovirus, both of which could have been avoided with greater border screening and security measures. The Obama administration avoided preventative policies that would have deterred these risks to public health. Plus, millions of Americans have lost their health insurance due to Obamacare and those that have health insurance pay more money for it than they did prior to its rollout.

Candidate for US Congress Larry Smith said in a statement: "Voters ought to ask: are you better off? The clear answer is no. Poverty and unemployment are greater, prices are higher, and people are less safe."

"Filemon Vela supports every Democrat policy that has led to more poverty, greater unemployment, and higher health risk. A vote for Vela only promises to make life worse for the people of Texas."

"When I am elected, my focus will be to fight for increasing job opportunity, reducing the government's stranglehold on the economy, and implementing common sense border security so that Texans are safe from disease and criminals."

Study Shows Republicans Pay Hispanic Campaign Workers Significantly More Than Democrats Do

(August 12, 2014) - The campaign for Larry Smith, Congressional candidate for Texas District 34, looked at the 2012 FEC data released by the New Organizing Institute. The data contains pay information for campaign staffers by political party, ethnicity, and gender. The average pay across these attributes clearly shows that Democrat campaigns pay Hispanic workers less than Republican campaigns do.

Smith said in a statement: "The Democrat party has worked for decades to convince people that Republicans are greedy and racist. But if that were true, why are Republican campaigns more generous to their workers than Democrats?"

"According to the data, Hispanics who work in Republican campaigns, on average, make 20% more than Hispanics who work in Democrat campaigns. Not only that, but a Republican Hispanic woman makes more than the average Democrat staffer."

"The Democrat party pushes policies that result in poverty. We are six years into Obama's presidency and the economy still struggles. Breitbart News reported last November that Obama announced for the 21st time that he planned to 'pivot to the economy.' If this administration's economic policies had ever worked, he wouldn't need to constantly shift focus to it."

"No one should be surprised that the Democrat party, which puts itself forward as a champion of the middle class and the poor, pays its people less. The message is clear: if you want to remain poor and underpaid, vote Democrat."

"Likewise, there is no war on women - certainly not when the data shows that Republicans pay women better than Democrats."

"Martin Luther King, Jr, was a Republican for a reason. Republicans don't see gender or ethnicity when they look at Americans. They see people who need good jobs and opportunity, and that will be my primary focus when I am elected to Congress."

Larry Smith Asserts Obama's Affection for Fences and Security in DC, but Not Texas

(July 22, 2014) - Larry Smith, Congressional candidate for Texas District 34, which borders Mexico, calls out President Obama on his blatant hypocrisy regarding the border crisis.

Smith said in a statement: "President Obama enjoys golfing at fenced, private country clubs which absolutely do not allow non-members, but our borders remain unsecure and non-citizens stream in at an alarming rate. Is President Obama a hypocrite? Without question."

"Last year, a young mother with a one-year-old child tried to breach the barrier at the White House. Miriam Carey was shot by capitol police and died. President Obama has no problem with guards who use guns to protect the border fence around his yard, but he couldn't care less for the security of others' property or the security of our nation's borders."

"It was only last fall that National Park Service workers erected barricades at the World War II Memorial at the direction of the Obama Administration. These barricades even earned the nickname 'Barry-cades,' named after the president himself. No one can say that President Obama doesn't like a good fence, but apparently only when it serves his purpose."

"I realize that the irony of this 'Fences for me but not for thee' approach is lost on our president, but the rest of us will not forget that nearly everything that happens at the White House is draped in hypocrisy."

"An unsecure border is not a safe border - not for children from foreign countries and not for US citizens. President Obama certainly has no problem with using barriers, guards, guns, and fences to guarantee his own safety."

"Sadly, Democrats such as Filemon Vela feel that they must side with the president's failed border policy and they rush to criticize Texas Governor Rick Perry for sending Texas National Guard troops to secure the border. In a press release, Vela said that the border is 'relatively safe' and needs no additional protection. When dead children are found floating in the Rio Grande during this border surge, such a statement not only defies reality but compassion as well."

"It's time to put party politics aside and recognize that allowing gang members into the United States is not good for the Rio Grande Valley, Texas, or the United States."

"Voters are tired of politicians who insist that they can live by a different set of rules than the rest of us. Those who live and work on our borders deserve that same level of personal safety as those who live and work in Washington DC."

Larry Smith Issues Statement on Islam

(July 9, 2014) - Larry Smith, candidate for Texas Congressional District 34, issued the following statement on Islam:

"I am aware that some comments I've made about Islam are being used against me. I guarantee - whatever someone might think I believe and know about Islam, that person can only scratch the surface."

"I bear in my body wounds that I received in combat from those who were fighting in the name of Islam. I also trained and fought beside Iraqis who embraced Islam as their religion. There is a depth to my experience few people in the United States can understand. But whatever impressions I have, I earned them by living it."

"The politically correct view is that Islam is a peaceful religion. It is certainly true that many practice it peacefully. It is also true that many practice it violently. Those who attack me about my personal experience with Islam completely ignore one side of it in favor of the other side of it. I prefer to see all of it. That is reality."

"No one can successfully train Iraqis, earn their trust, and fight beside them by being a bigot against their religion. I understand why, for some on the left, it might be politically expedient to want to dismiss me, but I will not allow uninformed critics to dismiss either my personal experiences or my success in working alongside Muslims toward the goal of a peaceful Iraq."

"For the record: I have no problem with anyone who works for peace, no matter what their religion is. I have no problem with anyone who respects the rights of women and children, no matter what their religion is. Anyone who suggests otherwise lies about my character."

Larry Smith Believes Obama Guilty of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy

(July 3, 2014) - Larry Smith, candidate for Texas' most southern Congressional District, finds significant indications that President Obama has purposefully placed children into harm's way for his own benefit. People who intentionally hurt children for attention can be accused of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. The facts surrounding the surge of unaccompanied, non-citizen children across the border support this charge.

In June 2012, President Obama announced Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in a memorandum that encouraged prosecutorial discretion when processing illegal immigrant children. Shortly after the release of this memorandum, the Office of Refugee Resettlement began to see a spike in the number of unaccompanied children who were referred to it. (These figures were compiled and released by the Congressional Research Service - http://fas.org/sgp/crs/homesec/R43599.pdf)

Prior to DACA in 2012, the apprehension of unaccompanied children was actually in decline from 2009 to 2011. DACA was the catalyst that directly prompted the surge of unaccompanied children.

On January 29, 2014, the Federal Business Office released a Request for Information entitled "Escort Services for Unaccompanied Alien Children." This request clearly anticipated that the United States would receive an unprecedented 65,000 children by late spring / early summer of 2014.

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-OK) highlighted the discovery of this Request for Information as proof that the Obama administration clearly foresaw the peril in which these children would be placed.

Smith said in a statement, "American society is riddled with mandatory reporters, such as teachers and doctors, who have the obligation to alert the authorities to prevent children from being harmed. Any adult who clearly sees danger for a child would step in to prevent it. President Obama, when requesting transport services for 65,000 unaccompanied children earlier this year, saw the coming harm and did nothing to stop it. These unfortunate children have become pawns to benefit Obama's push for his unpopular and destructive immigration policies."

"The president could see the trends clearly enough to accurately estimate the number of children who would need services, months in advance of their arrival. There is no question that he saw, just as clearly, that his announcement of DACA in 2012 began this abusive and unlawful trend."

"Today, we hear of reports that children are being abused, being used by drug cartels, and even dying. If a high school administrator prompted such mass abuse, that person would quickly be without a job and perhaps even found behind bars. The mental stability of the school administrator would be in question. Is a President of the United States who does such horrific acts deserving of less scrutiny and accountability?"

"Filemon Vela and Ruben Hinojosa have invited President Obama to come and survey what's taking place at our border. Nancy Pelosi was just here in the Rio Grande Valley as well. All of them are complicit in their support of these policies that led to child abuse on such a grand scale."

Larry Smith Insists the Federal Government Cannot Promote Policies That Allow Child Abuse

(June 18, 2014) - Larry Smith, candidate for Texas' most southern Congressional District, calls out the Obama administration on its failed executive action "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals" and the administration's failure to properly protect the US border. It's time for Texas to act now to prevent the massive child neglect taking place.

Smith said in a statement: "President Obama's use of executive orders that bypass Congress and his lax immigration enforcement have utterly failed not only the people of South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley, but also the unaccompanied children being dropped off at the US border."

"Democrat policies have encouraged a flood of people coming to and passing right through our border. It is unconscionable that abandoned children are living in squalid conditions. Likewise, Rep. Filemon Vela has suggested that economic conditions are involved in this surge of children, but children do not travel 800 miles alone without assistance and encouragement of governments. Rep. Vela fails his constituents by ignoring the facts of this crisis on his own doorstep."

"The people most expert in handling our borders - the border agents themselves - recognize what's happening along our border with Mexico as unprecedented. This is not a reflection of United States immigration policy as directed by Congress. This is unfortunately typical of this administration."

"When the federal government fails to respond to a crisis, the state in which that crisis occurs has an obligation to its people to uphold law and order. It's time for the state of Texas to operate in the absence of the federal government and prevent greater crisis from unfolding. It's time for Texas to act to save lives and property."

"President Obama has failed us along our border, just as his administration has failed us in Iraq. The sacrifices we veterans made in the Middle East are thrown away now by neglect. Entire towns that were safely in the hands of its citizens are being lost to insurgents. Will the Democrats ignore this crisis and allow this part of Texas to be overrun by those who disregard the law as well? Apparently so."

"Where we have ability to help, the United States is well known for its willingness to aid those in crisis, but we must do this in a lawful and manageable way and do so within our means. I call on Texas to move quickly for the sake of her citizens."

Larry Smith Proposes VA Solution amid Vela's Inaction

(June 11, 2014) - Larry Smith, candidate for Texas US Congressional District 34, proposes a solution to alleviate VA wait times for veterans. Although not yet in Congress, Smith is not content to wait for opponent Rep. Filemon Vela to act.

Smith's proposal would fast-track legislation that permits veterans waiting for the VA to see private doctors instead. The doctors who agree to see and treat veterans would receive dollar for dollar tax relief in exchange for their services.

Smith said in a statement: "This solution, suggested to me on the campaign trail as I visit with Texans, succeeds for two reasons: first, it gives some veterans a much quicker alternative to waiting in line at the VA, and second, for those veterans who want to receive treatment from the VA, fewer people will be in line, which provides relief for them and for staff at the VA."

"Our veterans deserve fair and timely treatment. The VA is obviously burdened, so let's look to the private sector to alleviate this crisis. Lawmakers can quickly push this solution to the president's desk. Let's move on this now."

"Our elected representatives must be out among the people to represent the people. As your congressman, my door will always be open and I look forward to working with you to bring good jobs to South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley."

Larry Smith Proves Democrats' Affordable Care Act is "Unaffordable" Care for Workers

(May 19, 2014) - Larry Smith, candidate for Texas US Congressional District 34, researched the cost of individual health care by looking at the per hour cost of health insurance premiums and deductibles in 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2014. He discovered that the so-called Affordable Care Act doubles the cost for $15 an hour workers from what they paid in 2008, as the following chart shows.

Smith said in a statement:

"Democrats promised people drastic savings - up to $2,500 a year for families - and yet the opposite is actually the truth. Democrats lied to you."

"If you make $15 an hour, your premium and deductible amount to over $8,000 a year. In 2011, if you purchased an individual insurance plan, your annual premium and deductible were just over $5,000. The 'Affordable Care Act' added $3,000 to your health insurance costs. There is no savings."

"It is easy to use promises to get elected, but when those promises are lies that mask giving more of your hard-earned money to big companies, you deserve to hear the truth. You're not only paying more, you're paying more than what they promised you would save."

"Before Obamacare, an individual paid around $2 an hour for health care coverage. Today, they pay over 25% of their pay for coverage, and there is no way that individuals can opt out of paying that. It's a mandate. So between taxes and forced insurance coverage, half of your $15 an hour goes to someone other than you. Is that fair? Is that right? Because it certainly is not affordable."

"Unemployment is over 10% in South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. It's time to stop giving the Democrat agenda power over your life. You cannot afford it. My campaign is to give your life and your wage back to you. It is time to reestablish the dream of freedom and small government."

Treatment for Veterans at Harlingen VA Clinic is a Preview of Government-Run Healthcare for All

(May 13, 2014) - Larry Smith, candidate for Texas US Congressional District 34, reacted to the allegations of extended delays and denied care at Harlingen VA health center with the following statement.

"As a veteran, I'm sickened by these reports of willful neglect at VA hospitals and health centers across America. We fought for liberty for all Americans, putting our very lives on the line. When we come home, the days of putting our lives on the line must end - especially within the halls of our VA facilities."

"Government-run health care has received a reputation as substandard, and deservedly so. We are seeing this in the broken promises of the Affordable Care Act. Obamacare forces people to lose their doctors and their health insurance, the exact opposite of what was promised. We were told that health care costs would be reduced for the middle-class, but those costs have increased significantly, sometimes doubling and even tripling."

"If the federal government cannot fairly manage a health program for 8 million veterans, how can we trust the government to manage health care for 320 million Americans? ACA will become what the VA already is. Our veterans, our children, and our parents deserve better."

"As your representative, I will fight for our veterans and for every citizen to receive adequate health care by encouraging free market choices and by ensuring accountability where government is necessary. We need to honor our commitment to veterans and not let them down, as our current officials have allowed."
